During this period of COVID-19 shutdown, many of the folks I know have used their extra time at home engaging in “pandemic projects”—taking music lessons, sewing a quilt, knitting a sweater, learning a new language, taking an online course, etc. My project has been writing a book with my colleague Isabel Anders.
Isabel and I worked together as editors and contributors to Synthesis Publications for more than thirty years. The regular study and writing on the Scriptures throughout the Church Year was a central part of my spiritual life. When Synthesis ceased publication earlier this year, Isabel suggested that we put together a book that offers theologically based reflections on the Scripture readings for the Sundays and major Holy Days of the Church Year.
Thus we began work on Circle of Days: A Church Year Primer—Year B. It is a celebration of the major themes and texts of the Christian Year. A primer is an introductory book on a particular subject; thus each devotional page of Circle of Days includes a summary of the Scripture readings and a question for further reflection along with introductions to the seasons of the Church Year.
Designed for anyone who desires a deeper understanding of Scripture and its meaning in our lives, Circle of Days is a set of books that will cover all three years of the Revised Standard Lectionary—Years A, B, and C. This first book for Year B—which begins with Advent 1 on November 29, 2020—is now available on Amazon in print and Kindle editions. Offering this companion to weekly worship for individuals or study groups, we hope that this series of books will make Scripture more accessible and meaningful to our readers.
