Photography as a spiritual practice
A response to Eve’s heart in the sand yesterday

Joanna-
Hope you are well.
I really appreciated the post from today. I also love to look for joyful random messages in the world around me (hearts, smiles,...) and photograph them.
When I was pacing the halls in the ICU in NYU Medical Center late one night while my son was gravely ill and on a ventilator in the Fall of 2016, I looked down and saw this rubber band on the floor in the shape of a heart and made this photograph with my iPhone. I believed then (and still do now) that it was a message of love and hope from my mother, who had recently passed away at the age of 92. She was always a firm believer in hopeful messages from departed relatives in troublesome times. I am glad to report that my son recovered completely.
Please thank your guest writer, Eve, for bringing back this hopeful memory to me.

Both Alan and Eve’s stories remind me of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, “The Purloined Letter,” where the answer is always in plain sight.
